SummerSlam will be Roman Reigns first Major Test in Singles Competition
In a leaked report, the top matches for SummerSlam that were locked in were revealed.
Among them, it listed Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton as one of the top matches. Originally, Triple H vs. Roman Reigns was booked for SummerSlam but plans are now changed to possibly have the match at Night of Champions or Hell in a Cell (Which I would only accept it happening at the Latter PPV if it is the Hell in a Cell Match).
The match may have changed but the purpose remains the same: it’s Roman Reigns’ major test in Singles Competition.
Before I go into the details let me get a rundown on what I thought before the leaked report.
Prior to the SummerSlam Match’s revealing, last reports gave the listing of Matches Roman Reigns was going to have prior the summer event.
– Money in The Bank: Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton
– Battleground: Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins
– SummerSlam: Roman Reigns vs. Triple H
– MiTB: Roman Reigns in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship Ladder Match
– Battleground: Roman Reigns vs. John Cena vs. Randy Orton vs. Kane – WWE World Heavyweight Championship
– SummerSlam: Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton
– Night of Champions or Hell in a Cell: Roman Reigns vs. Triple H
Originally, I believe Roman Reigns would be having three different trials to legitimize his status as a Main-Eventer, when he was in the Ladder Match, it would serve to see how well Roman Reigns would be handle himself in the ring without any help in a major title match, Battleground would serve to see how well he can do in a singles bout and SummerSlam would be his final test to see how well could he handle himself with a veteran in the business.
Now, both MiTB and Battleground serve how he can handle himself in a title match and main-eventing a PPV match.
In his MiTB match, he, at least how I saw it, handle himself well with a few errors, though he mostly shined in the last nine minutes.
But many will say he was hidden with all the other competitors, and certainty that will happen again at Battleground.
But at SummerSlam, it’s put up or shut up for Reigns as he will have no backup, no people hiding his weaknesses, it will be him and Randy Orton, one-on-one.
SummerSlam will be Roman Reigns major test to see if he can be on par with Randy Orton and show main-event caliber to legitimize his main event push.
Roman Reigns’ track record in singles division has mostly been with Mark Henry, Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, Bray Wyatt, and Randy Orton himself on RAW.
Of all the matches that happened, only a few ended conclusively, his matches with Mark Henry and CM Punk.
But of his single matches, his best one has to be with CM Punk on Old School RAW.
Granted, Ambrose’s interference gave Reigns the win, but ultimately it was a big victory beating the self-proclaim, ‘Best in the World’.
At SummerSlam he will face the Apex Predator of WWE, Randy Orton, and granted its momentum will be scaled down because of the most likely outcome will be Roman Reigns winning the match, its more focusing on how well Reigns can handle in a marquee bout by himself.
If Reigns performs poorly in the match, his main event push will be put into question but if he can put on a star-studded performance, his detractors will be proven wrong.
All we can do now though, is wait and see on August 17th.
